PENTACLE @ ARTS PRESENTERS

Artist Representatives Ivan Sygoda, Sophie Myrtil-McCourty, Angela Luem, Lauren Nixon and Doug Post will be at Booth #200 in the Rhinelander Gallery at the Hilton. We will have showcase schedules and information about the touring repertoires of all of our artists. Be sure to come by and say hello!

Change and Innovation (Redux)

Every year at this time we furrow our brows and try to come up with a clever theme for this Holiday newsletter. Last year it was "change and innovation." This year, in honor of the upcoming elections, it was to be "you've got choices." You do, indeed, and we'll tell you about them. But after due consideration, we decided to stick with "change and innovation (redux)." There's just too much that's new and different to brag about!

Our director of booking Sophie Myrtil-McCourty and her husband Paze just gave birth to Janaina Taylor McCourty. The wee thing was a wee bit early, but everything's fine. Will there be a special showing at Arts Presenters? Stay tuned.

Los Angeles-based choreographer David Roussčve has joined the Pentacle roster. He is creating "Stardust" for his Reality company, a smash-up of hip-hop and Nat "King" Cole that explores the idea of intimacy in an age of technology. Ask Ivan for details.

Put Pentacle's APAP Showcases on your calendar now - the Roster showcase Friday evening at Ailey; Metropolitan Intersections Saturday late morning at DNA downtown; and the Gallery Sunday evening in the theater at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School midtown. And keep an eye out for our annual Cooperative Dance Showcase mailing. Talk about choices! A dozen artists and agents propose a veritable smorgasbord of dance delicacies.

FocUS Dance is an important new endeavor instigated by the Dance/USA Agents Council. Its many components are worth your close attention. A week (January 3-8) of shared programs at The Joyce includes our own Kyle Abraham (Wednesday and Sunday at 7:30pm). Studio 5 at City Center will be set up as a lounge for facilitated discussions with dance artists and for a series of presenter-curated "pitch" sessions. More info at www.focusdance.us

We love fee subsidies as much as you do! Five Pentacle artists are eligible for NDP tour support in 2012-13:

Kyle Abraham/Abraham.in.Motion, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Sheetal Gandhi, Illstyle & Peace Productions, and Lucky Plush Productions. Reggie Wilson/Fist & Heel Performance Group is eligible for tour support in 2013-14. See below for the juicy details.

Meanwhile, enjoy safe holidays and a joyous New Year. See you in Rhinelander 200!

TOUR SUPPORT AVAILABLE!

NDP

Generous NDP fee support (up to 50%) is available for six of Pentacle's artists.

Lucky Plush Productions "The Better Half." Inspired by the film "Gaslight," "The Better Half" captures the claustrophobic and escapist tendencies in contemporary marriage through a language that is funny, emotional, intelligent and intensely physical. Contact Lauren Nixon for details.

Camille A. Brown and Dancers "Mr. TOL E. RAncE." A work that uses sketch comedy, satire and multimedia as a mechanism to investigate the emotional skin under the blackface phenomenon. Contact Lauren Nixon for details.

Sheetal Gandhi  "Bahu-Beti-Biwi" is a solo tour de force combining dance, vocalization and percussive text. It is an incisive commentary on the traditional role of Indian women. Contact Lauren Nixon for details.

Illstyle & Peace Productions "IMpossibble IZZpossible" celebrates the art and movement of hip-hop and includes a funky blend of locking, breaking, popping, tap and house dancing. Contact Lauren Nixon for details.

Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion  "Boyz N The Hood" is a culturally-referenced, evening-length dance work that pairs W.E.B. Du Bois' classic essays "Souls of Black Folk," John Singleton's film "Boyz N The Hood," and Philippe Jaroussky's album "Carestini: The Story of a Castrato" layered with an aggressive aural urban landscape. Set in Pittsburgh's historically black neighborhoods - Homewood and the Hill District - Boyz pays homage to the bold high-top fade era in hip hop while creating an emotional chronology of a culture conflicted with a history plagued by discrimination and genocide. Contact Sophie Myrtil-McCourty for details.

Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group "(project) Moseses Project" explores our relationships to leadership and the effects of migration on beliefs and customs. Grounded in Zora Neale Hurston's novel "Moses, Man of the Mountain" and with exploratory travels to Israel, Egypt, Turkey and Mali, the work looks at the migration of peoples and culture out of Africa and into the rest of the world. Conversations, interviews, research (kinesthetic and academic) and aesthetic crafting are shaping a dynamic evening-length work. Contact Sophie Myrtil-McCourty for details.

PennPAT

Illstyle & Peace Productions and Pasión y Arte Flamenco are eligible to receive PennPAT funding in 12/13 and 13/14. Created as a unique public/private partnership administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, PennPAT is a curated roster of Pennsylvania based artists. PennPAT offers touring subsidies of up to 50% of artist fees to presenters located in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, U.S. Virgin Islands and West Virginia. The next deadline is on February 15, 2012. For more information about Illstyle contact Lauren Nixon; for information about Pasión contact Doug Post or the company directly.
