“H.T. Chen’s choreography resides in an evocative, invented culture-world that shares ancient Chinese traditions with modern Western sensibility.” -The Birmingham News
South of Gold Mountain (NDP Tour support for 14/15)
H.T. Chen’s latest work is based on Chinese in the American South before WWII. Isolated in deeply segregated areas, the Chinese communities in the South persevered and eventually flourished there by being ‘invisible’, but more importantly, by holding onto their cultural traditions. The hidden stories of these people were revealed in research trips by H.T. Chen to Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee during 2012. The new production will feature a commissioned score of Blues music, lyrics by a Chinese American historian/performance artist, video footage of oral histories, historic photographs, and a multi-generational cast of performers from New York and the southern states.
The evening will also include “Warriors of Light” (1998) an abstract journey, evoking imagery of the human spirit as it seeks to attain enlightenment. The piece portrays a sense of struggle and journey towards something higher, exemplified in both the individual and the group.
