Danse4nia - About
Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble made its Philadelphia debut in the 2006 Philadelphia Fringe Festival where it presented its debut concert of Assemble for Purpose, featuring choreography by director, Antoinette M. Coward-Gilmore, Faye Snow and resident choreographer Shawn- Lamere Williams. The concert also featured Spoken Word Artist, Mo Beasley, and International Turntablist, DJ Razor Ramon. Within a year of its existence, Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble has moved to become an incorporated, non-profit, 501(c)3 professional dance company, with a functioning Board of Directors and is continually gaining momentum in the city of Philadelphia.
Within its first year of conception, Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble appeared in the following productions and performances:
- TB Christian Production of "Unwrapped"
- Suntan Entertainment production of "The Life Story of Marvin Gaye" that appeared in the legendary Lincoln Theatre (Washington DC)
- Dr. Paul Bodise's annual "Heal Thyself Garden Party" (Philadelphia, PA)
- Workshop in dance & performance for childcare agency CATCH Inc (Philadelphia, PA)
- Million More Movement commemoration of the Million Man March with Chairperson and legendary Composer Kenny Gamble
- Performers for the NAACP, Philadelphia Branch Gala Fundraiser
- One of the featured companies for the Maryland Council of Dance (Baltimore, Maryland)
Nia-Next, the Apprenticeship arm of Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble, fosters artistic growth and networking opportunities for young adults between the ages of 12- 21 whose interests lay heavily in pursuing a career in concert dance. Within our apprenticeship pro-gram, youth have the opportunity to train and study along side the professional dancers and Ballet Master of Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble, learn and perform company repertoire, in addition to working with the industry's leading professional choreographers. Nia-Next company members gain performance experiences that will prepare them for college level, conservatory programs, the entertainment industry and the professional arena of concert dance.
Founder, CEO & Artistic Director, Antoinette M. Coward-Gilmore is a native of Philadelphia, PA., where she began her training at The New Freedom Theatre under the direction of Patricia Scott Hobbs. Mrs. Gilmore was also under the direction of Faye Snow, Master Teacher of the Lester Horton Technique. Along with training at the New Freedom Theatre, Mrs. Gilmore has studied at the Franklin Learning Center, Pennsylvania Governor School of the Arts, Brenda Lee Dance Studio, and under the training program of the Philadelphia Dance Company. A graduate of the University of the Arts where she was on the Dean's List and a graduate of the Steinhardt School of Education of New York University, Mrs. Gilmore received her BFA & MA respectively in Dance Education & Performance from both institutions. She is one of the founding company members of Eleone Dance Theatre in Philadelphia, PA as well as former company member of Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company in New York NY where she toured nationally & internationally. Most recently, Mrs. Gilmore is the massage therapy dancer for Dr. Paul Bodise's lecture on Therapeutic Healing, and choreographer for the Prince Music Theater's Rainbow Company under the direction of Carolyn Sims-Nesmith. She is a certified New York State Dance Educator as well as a seminar and workshop facilitator for various arts agencies and dance conferences. Mrs. Gilmore has worked for private conservatories such as Harlem School of the Arts, Millennium Dance Company (New York, NY), and is a seasoned Instructor of NFT Performing Arts Training Program (Philadelphia, PA.). She has taught at Norfolk State University where she was Director of Dance, University of the Arts, Coppin State University and Grambling University's Summer Program and is currently an adjunct instructor of dance at Temple University, and Director of Modern Dance at Imhotep Institute Charter High School.
Antoinette M. Coward-Gilmore is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (initiated by Tau Omega Chapter, current member of Phi Beta Omega), the Actor's Equity Association, an Advisory Board Member of Eleone Dance Theatre, and Grant Panelist for Philadelphia Cultural Arts Fund 2008.
