Soul Steps - About
Soul Steps speaks the language of rhythm. Showcasing the African American oral storytelling tradition of step dance, this ensemble uses the entire body as percussive instrument. Through synchronized hand and foot movements they create Afro-urban rhythms that are integrated with call and response, spoken word, and narratives that tell stories of culture and community. Combining dance, theater, and music into one, Soul Steps offers a unique entertainment experience with appeal for diverse audiences. From theaters to concert halls to community festivals, they draw upon the versatility of step and universality of rhythm to create a performance that speaks to many cultures.
Featuring a five-member cast, Soul Steps showcases the history of step, moving from the South African gold mines of the 1880s, to the slave plantations in the United States, to the African American Greek organizations which began stepping in the early twentieth century. Integral to this plot are the personal stories of the cast whose narratives about overcoming are linked to the overall message of perseverance embedded in the history of the dance.

STEP
The clap of the hand! The stomp of the foot! For over a century, step dancers have used their bodies as musical instruments to create a new physical language that inspires, celebrates and forges community. STEP brings this explosive art form to the theatrical stage in a high-energy performance, where dance, Afro-urban rhythms and poetry relay the cultural and personal stories of a new generation, and explores their link to the past. This interactive performance brings audiences to their feet with claps, stomps and shouts that transport them from being spectators to participants in the celebration.
In addition to theatrical performances, concert-style formats are also included in our repertory. Please contact us for more information.

Soul Steps provides educational workshops that not only expose young people of all ages to the history and culture of step dance, but also empowers them to use step as a language to express themselves and impact their communities. Appropriate for all experience levels, we engage students in the varied techniques and elements of step, including basic percussive movement, gumboot dancing, call and response, and the use of props. Students are instructed both in learning the dance and in choreographing their own steps. Some workshops also guide students in exploring the relationship between words and sound by integrating the dance with poetry and personal narratives. Intermediate and advanced classes are also available. Workshops can be tailored to suit the specific interests of individual groups.
