Soul Steps concentrates on the body as a percussive, story-telling instrument. With every slap of the thigh, twist of the hip, turn of the foot, jump in the air, and shout the company showcases the African American oral storytelling tradition of step dance. Through synchronized hand and foot movements they create Afro-urban rhythms that are integrated with call and response, spoken word, and personal narratives that tell stories of the ensembles’ culture and community.
“The high energy NYC-based Soul Steps aim to do for step dancing what Savion Glover has done for tap: revitalize the authentic style for a new generation.”
