IVAN SYGODA WILL REMAIN ACTIVE IN THE NEW POSITION OF FOUNDING DIRECTOR
Ivan Sygoda, currently co-director of Pentacle with Mara Greenberg, will assume a new role on July 1, 2013. After 37 years, Ivan will get a well-earned “reprieve” from the daily responsibilities and pressures of running a not-for-profit arts organization when he moves to the new position of “Founding Director.” In that capacity, Ivan will remain on the Pentacle staff working, from his “unruly” desk, on special initiatives and projects, and serving the greater dance community through his affiliations with the Bessie Committee, the New York City Arts Coalition, the New York State DanceForce, and the SouthArts Dance Touring Initiative. Doesn’t sound like much of a vacation, as Ivan will clearly still maintain a hectic schedule and is sure to remain one of the major forces in the dance world.
As we launch our 38th Season, this is a particularly exciting fall for Pentacle. Check out the revamped lists of artists we are representing through our Roster, Metropolitan Intersection, and Gallery. We’re providing these dance companies with new showcases and higher visibility at the major booking conferences.
Our national infrastructure development programs, Help Desk and Back Office continue to expand in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago.
We’re also implementing a number of innovations that will greatly improve the support we offer through our fiscal services, educational programming, and internships. Please read on for details, and visit the Pentacle website regularly for events listings, blogs, and breaking news.

Spring is always a busy and exciting time at Pentacle. April and May are the peak performing months for the dance world. Yet even while the diverse and dynamic artists Pentacle represents are putting the crowning touches on our 36th season, the booking staff is hard at work on 2012-13 and beyond. Pentacle’s infrastructure and development programs, Help Desk/L.A. and Back Office are in full swing, invigorating the Southern California dance community. Help Desk/Chicago is set to launch on July 1st! Pentacle’s educational programming, Behind the Scenes, has expanded into new schools, our Fiscal Services are now being used by artists based in California, and Movement Media is having its biggest season yet of screenings, workshops, and discussions.

This fall Pentacle begins its 36th season and it is busier than ever. Pentacle represents an exciting array of the most dynamic and diverse dance makers-artists at the top of their respective styles and exciting emergent talent. Our programs are layered deep in the New York dance community and we are now working directly with dance communities in other metropolitan areas. With so many exciting things going on Pentacle is pleased to launch this quarterly newsletter to keep the national dance community up to date with our activities.

Generous NDP fee support (up to 50%) is available for four of Pentacle’s artists.
Bridgman | Packer Dance. Accessing the iconic paintings of Edward Hopper as a point of departure, Voyeur bears witness to fragmented moments of private lives. The work was created by choreographer/performers Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer in collaboration with filmmaker Peter Bobrow. Voyeur is an installation and performance. By design, the work can be seen in galleries as well as proscenium theaters. Voyeur incorporates a multi-surfaced set transformed through video projections, evoking spatial and psychological enclosures. Performers merge and collide with video imagery from both pre-recorded and live camera sources. Contact Angela Luem at angelal@pentacle.org for details.
Lionel Popkin. Ruth Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, an evening-length trio to a commissioned score by Guy Klucevsek, looks back at the early twentieth-century career of legendary dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis, who captivated the concert dance world with her “Oriental” dances. Popkin, a Jewish-Indian hybrid, is also drawn to images from the sub-continent, but as a post-modern choreographer he remains uneasy about exploiting these striking materials. Quicksilver choreography, swirling fabric and electric leaf blowers are our gateway into Miss Ruth’s vivid world and Popkin’s musing on the ethics and aesthetics of cultural appropriation. David Roussève/Reality. Stardust
Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group. (project) Moseses Project is a full-length dance performance that examines how we lead and why we follow. Grounded in Wilson’s re-reading of Zora Neale Hurston’sMoses, Man of the Mountain (the Moses story told as a Southern folk tale in African-American vernacular), and with his exploratory travels to Israel, Egypt, Turkey and Mali, (project) Moseses Project examines the migration of peoples and culture from Africa out into the World, paying attention to the effects migration has on beliefs. International Performing Arts for the Youth (IPAY) recently selected Ana Maria Alvarez, Artistic Director of CONTRA-TIEMPO, to participate in Fresh Tracks Europe in Tanzhaus- NRW, Düsseldorf, Germany later this month. Ana Maria will be the only North America-based choreographer participating in this project focused on dance for young audiences.

We welcome the newest members of our Roster; zoe | juniper and David Roussève/Reality and extend a welcome to our new colleague Francine Sheffield, Artist Representative for the Metropolitan Intersections roster. Francine has performed and toured with choreographers such as H.T. Chen, Wendy Perron, David Roussève, Amy Pivar, Marlies Yearby and is a former company member of Urban Bush Women. She is also a recent New York University graduate with an MA in Performing Arts Administration. Pentacle is proud to announce that Roster and Metropolitan Intersections artists Ana Maria Alvarez of CONTRA-TIEMPO and Sheetal Gandhi have been invited to attend the INTERNATIONALE TANZMESSE NRW in Duesseldorf, Germany, as part of an American delegation of dance artists and administrators, under the banner The American Corner.
CONTRA-TIEMPO’s fusion of Afro-Cuban, Salsa and contemporary dance and Sheetal’s vocabulary influenced by Kathak, Modern and West African dance are exemplary representations of today’s contemporary, American modern dance.
Several Pentacle Artists are set to participate in the RCAM/Dance NOW! Independent Showcase at PAE. Pentacle companies will be showcasing all three nights at the Little Haiti Cultural Center 212-260 NE 59th Terrace, Miami. Don’t miss them in action! There will be a shuttle from the Fontainebleau Hotel and The Colony to the Little Haiti Cultural Center and back to the hotel after the showcase each night.

CULTIVATING LEADERSHIP IN DANCE provides an unparalleled opportunity for interns to work with vibrant and emerging choreographers and companies while participating in a structured internship program.
Twenty-Three dance companies and individual artists will participate in Pentacle’s Arts Management Paradigm programs Help Desk® and Back Office in three cities-Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco-during 2012-2013. Participants will work with Pentacle staff and 18 mentors, all experts in the field of performing arts management. In addition to working one on one with their mentors and Back Office Managing Directors, all Help Desk® and Back Office stakeholders will meet regularly, both in their home cities, and as a national network, to build a supportive peer community.

No matter how well organized the Artistic Director might be, the entity can only develop so far when there is neither time nor personnel to support the creative practice, never mind to implement any long-term plans. This conundrum has a negative impact on the company’s ability to grow organizationally, but more importantly it prevents the Artistic Director from engaging in and growing his/her creative process. The conception and choreography of work itself becomes stymied and suffers.
A central part of Pentacle’s mission is to respond to artists’ needs. So, we want to continue hearing from you! The Scientist and the Showgirl follows the path of a dance filmmaker turning into a pyromaniac sculptor, and the unlikely ways that those things relate to one another. Starting with the challenges of color, light, and camera movement, Kat Green found herself going down a rabbit hole of cause and effect, leading her to play with the ideas of telling a story through minutia, cadence, and finally making inanimate objects dance.

For her Kinetic Cinema screening, choreographer/director Yanira Castro will share the creative process behind her latest performance work, “The People to Come.” Each performance of the “People to Come” is built upon inspiration and source material contributed by the community. To make the submission process easy and accessible to all, Castro looked at how other artists and entrepreneurs have developed similar projects using the crowd-sourcing capabilities of the web. For Kinetic Cinema she will show examples of works that inspired her and discuss how some of the audience submissions she has received have become part of the piece. Of particular interest to her is the blurring of lines between artist, performer, and audience that is occurring in this work, and what it means for the art form.
On October 10th Kinetic Cinema will feature a night with filmmaker Derrick Belcham introducing the dance films of La Blogotheque. Derrick will discuss the practice and theory of the Take Away Show and screen a selection of new works he shot in New York City. Following the screening there will be a Q & A with the filmmaker and selected artists from the films.

Movement Media announces it’s fall season of Kinetic Cinema starting October 10th and continuing on the second Wednesday of every month at Spectacle, an underground movie theater in the heart of Williamsburg. The season’s line up includes Derrick Belcham’s “Take Away Dance” a series of new dance films for La Blogotheque on Oct 10th; multimedia artist Suzon Fuks from Australia on Nov 14th; and New York choreographer Yanira Castro on Dec 12th. Every year, the Dance Films Association’s Dance on Camera Festival showcases films that highlight the relationship between movement and cinema. Hundreds of submissions are received, but only a few are able to be screened. For this special program we have selected some of our favorites that were not able to be shown last year, and will screen them as part of our first Kinetic Cinema event of 2012.
On December 3rd, Kinetic Cinema will be curated by Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, a New York-based contemporary dance theatre company that has developed a unique process using Skype to create new work during the temporary relocation of Artistic Director Samar Haddad King to Palestine.
