Pentacle’s Year in NYC Arts Education: A Recap
GROOVE WITH Me FINISHES STRONG
Long time partner, Groove With Me concluded a year of contemporary choreography and hip-hop dance with a recital at The United Palace on June 25th, 2023. Here are a few special snapshots from the evening:
STEPHANIE Peña & DANCERS!
Teen contemporary dance students capture a joyful moment as they gather for a selfie with their Pentacle Teaching Artist, Stephanie Peña, backstage after their recital. Several of these dancers have been under Stephanie’s guidance for multiple seasons, forging deep and meaningful connections. The bonds cultivated in this artistic journey are a testament to the profound impact Stephanie has had on their growth and development as dancers and individuals.
CELEBRATE ARTS EDUCATORS
On stage at the recital, amidst a gathering of esteemed Groove With Me instructors, the outstanding Pentacle Teaching Artists, Stephanie Peña (third from the left) and Solomon Goodwin (second from the right), were duly recognized. The resounding chants and cheers emanating from the enthusiastic crowd served as a testament to their unwavering dedication and selfless contributions to the vibrant Harlem community. Pentacle continues to uplift and empower artists and youth in the vibrant arts scene of New York City.
RISEBORO’S AFTER-SCHOOL STUDENTS SHINE! ⭐
Despite their young age, P.S. 86’s 2nd-4th graders exhibit remarkable strength and courage! In June, a group of thirty boys and girls assembled in the auditorium of a Bushwick school to proudly demonstrate their step dance skills before an audience of parents, community members, teachers, and friends.
Solomon Goodwin, a Pentacle Teaching Artist, skillfully orchestrated a captivating performance for P.S. 86 After-School students, highlighting the values of collaboration and community. Pentacle is proud to collaborate with RiseBoro Community Partnership in offering after-school dance instruction that incorporates positive youth development principles such as providing adult role models and empowerment.
Pentacle partners with RiseBoro Community Partnership for after-school arts education in Brooklyn public schools P.S. 86, I.S. 349, and I.S. 562.
LEAH’S 5TH YEAR 🎉 WITH URBAN ASSEMBLY SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
In her 5th year of instruction at Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts, Teaching Artist, Leah Smiley Tubbs, teaches a weekly ballet class to high school students in Ms. Angela Reid’s dance class.
When asked about her improvements in ballet class, one senior ballet student says, “In the beginning, doing floor work was difficult and didn’t process in my head. Now ‘the gears are turning,’ as Leah [Teaching Artist] says.”
Dancers diligently honed their ballet fundamentals, terminology, and choreography in preparation for their Spring Dance Concert held this May. Bravo! We eagerly anticipate another exceptional year in the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year.
